I have spent time with Shivendra on cricket tours of Sri Lanka and South Africa. What stands out is the fun element in him despite the crazy, i mean insanely crazy, work pressures that television industry throws on you. Ever smiling, full of humour and heck, he is an allrounder. He has been learning classical music properly now and boy, the evenings he has entertained us on tour with his singing have been memorable. He had every reason to be aloof if he wanted - he is a experienced and successful TV veteran - but he would move with the youngsters wonderfully, putting everyone at ease. Shivendra and I have been together on various assignments abroad --- perhaps some of the most demanding and grueling tours, given our work profile as sports reporters. And if hindsight is called exact science, then Shivendra was one reason why I, why me but the entire gang in fact, could smilingly endure the challenges in our respective spheres. There was that unmistakable glint in his eyes to explore new destinations, to visit new places and was always fascinated about learning and experiencing the local flavour. His zest is infectious, and even after a hard day%u2019s work, he would compel all of us to squeeze out our last drip of adrenaline. But it was almost like going out for a refill; Shivendra would then be our official tour guide, sometimes his methodical steps would leave us impressed, sometimes his hit-and-trial effort will leave us wee-bit irritated but it was all fun nevertheless. He was our captain, and unlike the cricket team, there was never a second candidate who could do the job better. And his form never dipped! There were so many facets about touring we never knew about, until this guy arrived on the scene. He would blast out his ipod on the speaker and throw a party that would beat the best discos in town, simply because he would coax us to drop guard and just unwind. Suddenly he would throw in some shayaari, some pure-bred Hindustani classical and churn it with some desi moves on the floor --- all in a night that no DJ would even imagine to bring it in the mix. I have heard experts throw theories about the importance to switch on and off to bring in the best results, but this beanpole from Allahabad gave practical lessons. It%u2019s always fun when he%u2019s around, maybe because everything came naturally to him. Good luck.
