Unscheduled halt in Madikeri and Abbe Falls

Posted By thecouple

Our revised schedule (after two nights in Mysore) was to go to Mangalore. But the big brother Pajero had some issues (which later turned out to be mere suspicions). As they waited to get it sorted out, we decided to check out the Abbey Falls.

Abbey Falls is in fact inside a private coffee plantation. After a few minutes of walk through the dark path that arose an eerie feeling, sound of gushing water welcomed us. Abbey Falls is a sight to behold!

As it got late, we dropped Mangalore plans and settled for the day in Madikeri.

Another signboard. Another detour: Dubare Elephant camp

Posted By thecouple

Another signboard. Another detour. This time it was the Dubare Elephant camp near Madikeri.

On reaching there, we realised that the camp is on the other side of the river and we need to take a boat to go there. Or wait till 4.30 to see the elephants taking bath and even give them a bath.

The elephant camp is more than 100 years old and is used to tame wild elephants, which are caught from the forests, when they become a threat to the nearby farms and villages. Only in the last 6-7 years, this has become a tourist attraction. Due to lack of time, we could not make it to the camp.

A slice of east in west: Namdroling Monastery

Posted By thecouple

Kushal Nagar, about 30 kms from Madikkeri, has a huge settlement of Tibetan refugees. It feels like you’ve reached a different country. It’s sad that these people were displaced from their motherland. But, they seem to have made peace here.

We explored the Namdroling Monastery and the Golden Temple. The colourful and vibrant temples and adornments are awesome . It was prayer time and we could listen to the chantings for a while.

At a sculptor’s studio

Posted By thecouple

We got to peep into an accomplished sculptor, Mr Deshpande’s studio, where he sculpts life-like statues. Though he was away, Prasad being Mr Deshpande’s ex-student, got permission from him to visit the studio and take photographs.

We haven't heard the 'Suprabhatham' chant for many many years. While we were in Chennai and Kerala we used to hear that quite often. First day morning. And as we walk into this nice restaurant at Vashi for breakfast, the 'Suprabhatham' chant welcomes us. Perhaps a good omen on the first stop on first day.

About us

We, Unny & Bindhu, are a couple currently based in Mumbai. The best introduction can be: He (Unny) - Armchair traveler. Reluctant reader. Would-be writer. Amateur photographer, Day dreamer… and likewise, a pretender of too many things.

She (Bindhu) - Add a few more pretensions - a good cook, a good host, etc. Easily mistaken for a serious, intellectual reader, but far from it. Engineer by qualification; freelance writer by choice. Also volunteers as a teacher for Akanksha, an NGO.
