A primary school session
Posted By thecouple
Just outside the Nagarhole National Park, the sound of a prayer being recited by a bunch of kids caught our attention. It turned out to be a government primary school for mostly children of the tribals in the area. They were getting ready for their mid-day meals. The prayer is mandatory before lunch.
We dropped in and met the teachers and the kids. The head teacher Mr Thyagarajan and his colleagues welcomed us with broad smiles. The school was set up for tribal kids and ever since the mid-day meal scheme started, attendance has improved. About 140 students attend this small school managed by three permanent and two temporary teachers. The main problem for teachers is that there is no public transport in the area and they often walk about 7-8 kms to reach the school.
Unlike many government schools in remote areas, the teachers appeared very enthusiastic and committed. The children of course were enjoying their meals.

About us
We, Unny & Bindhu, are a couple currently based in Mumbai. The best introduction can be: He (Unny) - Armchair traveler. Reluctant reader. Would-be writer. Amateur photographer, Day dreamer… and likewise, a pretender of too many things.
She (Bindhu) - Add a few more pretensions - a good cook, a good host, etc. Easily mistaken for a serious, intellectual reader, but far from it. Engineer by qualification; freelance writer by choice. Also volunteers as a teacher for Akanksha, an NGO.
