Another signboard. Another detour: Dubare ELephant camp

Posted By thecouple

Another signboard. Another detour. This time it was the Dubare Elephant camp near Madikeri.

On reaching there, we realised that the camp is on the other side of the river and we need to take a boat to go there. Or wait till 4.30 to see the elephants taking bath and even give them a bath.

The elephant camp is more than 100 years old and is used to tame wild elephants, which are caught from the forests, when they become a threat to the nearby farms and villages. Only in the last 6-7 years, this has become a tourist attraction. Due to lack of time, we could not make it to the camp.

Thanks for the post. It reminded me of my visit to this Dubare camp in 2005. Yes you got to cross the Kaveri and reach the other side to meet the elephants and see them being washed/scrubbed from very close. The forest officer in-charge when i visited was a very informed person and made a good presentation on the elephant per se and how docile they actually are contrary to what we all believe (they are dangerous only during the mating season). Overall a very nice place. They also offer an elephant safari but i couldnt take it for want of time. Sad you guys couldnt make it to the other side.

This place seems to be an intriguing and interesting too.

Hope to include it it my itinerary when i travel to this area.

It would have been icing on cake if you could photo of elephants.

Medikeri is surrounded with lush green mountains well known for its coffee n pepper plantaion n absolute feast for eyes , is undiscovered underrated hilly area in south part of India. I have lot of fond memories of coorg from my recent visit this year n it’s been a wonderous journey.Dubare is one of them>>> an experience in itself—-  living in a real jungle provided nice cosy cottages where i din shouted( ” ISS JUNGLE SE MUJHE BACHAO” smile)) + elephant interaction how can i miss mentioning that infact it’s been THE MOST amazing experience>>> bathing wild trained elephants . Coorg is pure delight for types who admire nature and is adventurous as it provides superb trekking opportunities and river rafting as well. Looking at ur pics >>> >>>. Deja vu. keep riding guys:)
