A slice of east in west: Namdroling Monastery

Posted By thecouple

Kushal Nagar, about 30 kms from Madikkeri, has a huge settlement of Tibetan refugees. It feels like you’ve reached a different country. It’s sad that these people were displaced from their motherland. But, they seem to have made peace here.

We explored the Namdroling Monastery and the Golden Temple. The colourful and vibrant temples and adornments are awesome . It was prayer time and we could listen to the chantings for a while.

The ornate and beautiful Golden Temple, Representative of Tibetan culture, is a fairly recent addition here.

Though easily accessible from Kushalnagar which borders Coorg ( Kodagu ) the settlement and the temple are actually located in Bylukoppa that is part of Periapatna Tq. in Hunsur Dist. of Karnataka.

I thought this settlement was called “Bylekupe” just check? And going by that, I presume Kushal Nagar is a nagar inside the overall settlement. I have visited this place in 2005 and the monastries are really a visual treat - the colours, the architecture, the small seats…In one of the monastries, i spotted a young boy practicing his Kung-Fu in the living quarters and after a few mins. when he noticed me watching him with keen interest, he blushed and ran away. Was a wonderful experience visiting this place. Great to re-visit those memories, thanks to your post!!

To Continue,
Bylukoppa;  Bylukuppe;  Bylkuppe;  - however one pronounces it;....... is still located in Periapatna Taluk and Not in Kushalnagar   which is a Town in Coorg District
