Our Lonely Planet

Posted By bharath

Our Lonely Planet appears to be well traveled. A true veteran in terms of travel experience. Dog eared and well worn, it’s a miracle that all the pages are held together. The book has made its way through many locations and helped us get out of or get in to places. It has been used to find hotels, a good café, places of interest, or even distances.
Though some of the information has been amended we’ve added numbers of new places, made corrections to old numbers, written down details of interesting people we met along the way.
The book is now 5 years old and has information which in completely out of date. Some hotels don’t exist anymore, phone numbers have changed and new places of interest have been added in subsequent editions.

The heights of the passes in Ladakh are different between the book and the markings at the top of the passes. There are roads marked on the map which exist only on paper.
Andamans has a few Islands that do no longer exist.

Why do we hold on to our copy? On page 322 you’ll find an entrance ticket to the Jama Masjid in Srinagar and if you happen to flip to page 1044 you’ll find special permission for Ross Smith Island in Andamans. Page 427 has a leaf from the Bodh Gaya tree.

For every traveler there is one object that they carry with them wherever they travel- A notepad, a pair of shoes, a well worn pair of jeans, maybe even a torch. These are our constant companions who have experienced everything that we have and are part of the memories we bring back from our travels. They are also the objects that we turn to or the objects that remind us that it’s once again time to put on your travel shoes and head off on the open road. This is our Lonely Planet.

P.s: For some inexplicable reason there is a parking ticket from Bhutan hidden in the pages.
P.P.s- will have to think about replacing it at some point, but for now, we shall continue to add to an already bulging collection between the pages.

Hardly a ‘Lonely’ planet considering all the travelling you both do!

This post reminds me of the lines from ‘On the Road’... “Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.”

You still have places to go.

Smile and keep explorin’!

Dear wild -
I repeat and request again - this isn’t merely a Photographic contest add some marketing spice to it even if you don’t like it ...this contest is from a car company ...they want some thing additional too ....please do it or else you would lose some of the followers and may be the contest ........watch the other 2 couples too !! ...
Please take few snaps with the Cedia in the Foreground !! TGDC wants their Share of marketing as well ....get tuned for that….that would help you to score more ........Are you listening ??

Just follow your heart! Winning and losing is part of the game.
You will have several more opportunities in life, but “yeh 10 din tumse koi nahi cheen sakta. isi liye khoob khelo!” (dialogue borrowed and modified from chak de!)

Guys, as Ram pointed out, Follow your hearts!! Even if it means losing out on the top honours.

Agree, you’ll feel bad for a few days, but once the dust settles, you can look back without any regrets and be happy. Thats all that matters! You know whats best. Just follow what your heart says!

You already are our Winners!! smile

It is always a battle between
winning and losing
getting and not getting
reaching and not reaching

It is always a battle between
despair and repair
sorrow and consoling

What no one knows
is that whatever the end
it is always a start
for a new experience

So just keep moving
and doing whatever you want to do
and you’ll reach your destination!

Dedicating this poem to all those who dare to give something unique, something new, something out-of-the-blue, something that isn’t created to conform… this blog is one such thing.

marketing is all about a brilliant idea and how it is implemented… TGDC is one such idea…a cedia in every pic and every blog will simply kill this idea… so KS is a bit off the mark in his conclusions.

Have fun, do what your heart says….

The teams must also keep checking the comments sections of their earlier blogs and answer the questions/queries raised by the followers. It will then become an interactive blog.

Some tips/advices given by the followers can be also of use to the contestants in their subsequent blogs. Acknowledging any interesting observation made by a follower will surely end up in encouraging them to write more…. otherwise it is more like a unilateral participation where some one comes, logs in, writes, logs out, and moves out of the blog.

Even if I’m not following you right now, there’s no denying I love your posts.
Each one is soulful, heartfelt.
And the pictures that accompany are painfully beautiful.
Keep up the good work guys.
Wish you luck & happiness always,
Jasleen

My now-daily request: please no pix of the Cedia. What’s it now, 3-4 days left in this thing? Just that many days to get through, another 1000 or so km, and you’ll have made it through without a single shot of the car! And I will thank you profusely.

Here’s my thought: you keep doing your own thing, you will win this thing.

(Those two “things” are different things).

As others here have said (thank you) follow your hearts.

cheers,
dilip.

Various Lonely Planets have been our companion on all our travels abroad. Haven’t got one of India though. Must remedy that.
Love the way you have personalised your copy. The bits and pieces from our travels go into a journal and become our personal lonely planet.

In case you guys do end up in Jaipur don’t do the usual hawa mahal, amer palace routine…. instead try and hit Jaigarh Fort… it’s off the beaten track, has a sound and light show in the evening and most important locate Jaivan and go ballastic with your cameras. It’s the largest known canon ever made and the funny part is that it was never used in a war….. a hilarious story associated with that canon is that when the soldiers loaded it up and set the fuse on fire they actually ran down hill into a moat filled with water and dived in….. this was to save themselves from the shockwave…. give it a shot ooops I mean once over smile it’ll make for an interesting post….

I do believe i have the privilege of traveling with this famous book.. and referred to its dog eared pages.. (although limited to my ability to read short sentences in fine print)... but i do believe.. of my interest.. is the little brown book that accompanies this book…ever so famous.. known as the “accounts book”.. that carries a back-up set of top secret memories and sure to carry a more valuable price some day!... thats the reason that Radhika chooses to not reveal its contents on this blog. A lot less informative as compared to the Lonely planet.. it carries day to day accounts of travels around the country.. each account holds a memory… for all those who have held careful accounts during there travels.. they would immediately relate to this… You guyz.. i know im gonno get shouted at for revealing that little secret..
I do believe you guyz have done more justice to the lonely planet.. and its nice to see a tribute…

While in Agra - cover Dayalbagh marble temple - it is beautiful… and Fatehpur sikri and also Bharatpur bird sanctuary and some focus on local Leather Tannery, marble works and sweet Petha and of course Sikandra where Akbar’s Tomb is.. Red Fort too. If you have time include Vrindaban near mathura.
Taj used to be closed for public on fridays…
