I work in the financial sector and Rohit works in a completely different line – media! We complement each other, I’m the planner, he’s the executor, I’m a little more reserved than he is, he’s a social butterfly, I need a plan, he’ll go with the flow. He’s completely touristy and loves being in the picture and clicking pictures. I love taking his pictures! I love my books; he loves his scale model planes. He loves telling stories, and about the littlest things too! Considering the contrasts, we form a well balanced team! We have a lot in common though, which is why we got married! Since we both love to drive, it's easy to just get in the car and set off! If the roads are better, it's even more of a pleasure, and so one of the first things we decided ( when we got married 1 1/2 years ago ) is that we would indulge in a lot of travelling and it’s something we’ve done – be it shorter driving trips, long driving trips ( around 1600 kms ), or just getting on a train or a flight and getting out of the city! Not to mention our Firefox cycles which we take out on the weekends to go exploring the surrounding neighborhoods! Our shared passion for the color red is evident from our red car, red bike, red cycles and a lot of red in our wardrobe! Rohit is an avid blogger and has been blogging since 2006.

We are the best candidates because...

... given the opportunity, we would pack our bags and be on the road headed somewhere, at the drop of a hat! When Rohit and I found out about this contest, it seemed to be just perfect for us! We both love driving, and have been on four long driving trips so far in just 1 ½ years, apart from our other holidays. Rohit’s love for travelling is also evident from his earlier trips on his bike which he had bought to go on road trips ( check out http:// www.kazi2.blogspot.com ) His love for automobiles got him working for an automobile portal for several years during the early dotcom era. He now works with an FM Radio station, but jumps at the opportunity to test drive a new car. Between us we’ve worked out the best way to make the most of these trips, and lots of it has come about by the experiences we’ve gone through on the first few trips! It’s all about team work! I sit for hours on the internet and “google” all the distances, maps, sightseeing and must visit spots, and then we sit down together and plan it all out. We go very well prepared, right down to an icebox with chilled water and soft drinks! We’re both paranoid about safety, and the first thing we do after getting into the car is strap on our seat belts, be it for city or highway driving. We’ve learnt that truck drivers are the most decent drivers on the highway ( contrary to what some people think ), and are also the best people to check with for directions in case of doubt. We make sure we’ve got our mobile phones charged to be used in case of any emergencies, a fully loaded IPod which connects to the car music system, a camera or two for documenting our travels ( at times even our phone camera is used in emergencies to capture the moment ) our hip pouches which are handy for keeping money, pens, phones, documents, et all, Rohit’s guitar, and we’re all set! While on our trips, we maintain an expense sheet right down to the last rupee – believe me, post the trip it’s interesting to go through it! It also helps while planning the next trip, as you know exactly what to budget for. And the avid blogger of the team, Rohit makes sure that the photographs and the write ups are up on his blog for our friends and family to read so that they feel like they have shared our experiences! Our rules: don’t overtake from the left, use your headlights wisely, and drive safe! While on the road, relishing a meal at the highway “dhabas” is a must. Oh, and we try and avoid driving after sundown. We found out about the contest only on 12th July, and sent out the request for votes to our friends, family and colleagues on 13th July, so we’re thrilled with the support we’ve received since then – thank you all! We hope we get to share with them tales of an epic ten day journey in an awesome Red Mitsubishi Cedia Sports!

Our Travel Plan

We’d decided that we’d want to do at least a couple of long driving trips a year, and we’ve been contemplating a few for the last couple of months now. One was a bike / car trip to Leh and Ladakh, another by car to the North East and North Bengal ( Darjeeling, Gangtok, Yumthang, Gorumara and Jaldapara ), and also our more ambitious project – driving down to Kanyakumari! Our original plan was to do it along the eastern coastline from Kolkata, but since we found out about TGDC which starts from Mumbai, doing it along the western coastline would make for a scenic and challenging route and give us a chance to realize this dream. The route we’ve thought of is: Mumbai to Panaji : 535.10 Kms, Panaji to Mangalore : 337.14 Kms, Mangalore to Kochi : 382.55 Kms, Kochi to Kanyakumari : 277.18 Kms ( via Thiruvananthapuram ), Total : 1531.97 Kms. Since we’re the kinds to make the most out of a journey and see as much as we possibly can, we thought a different route back would be more interesting! Kanyakumari to Chennai : 678.26 Kms, Chennai to Bangalore : 323.37 Kms, Bangalore to Panaji : 580.48 Kms, Panaji to Mumbai : 535.10 Kms, Total : 2117.21 Kms. The journey back does entail a slightly longer route than necessary, but we thought we could make a pit stop at the Hindustan Motors Chennai Car Plant at Thiruvallur where Mitsubishi cars are manufactured ( including the one we’ll be driving if we’re one of the lucky 3! ). We’re hoping we might get a chance to take a spin on the test track too in a Pajero which is our dream vehicle! It’s going to be a long tough challenging drive ( 3649.18 Kms ), but one which will be well worth it. Rohit and I work as a team, and with the right kind of planning and the zeal and enthusiasm we have for driving and road trips, I’m sure we can take this through and do justice to TGDC! I’m the planner and organizer of the team, so I normally make sure that we’ve got some kind of a broad agenda planned out, and have a list of all places to see and visit, and then we just work around that. The advantage is that while we manage to cover all of what we want to and make the most of the trip, the rest is just spontaneous and we go with the flow! The broad agenda we’ve planned for this trip is as follows! Day 1: The excitement is at an all time high now, so an early morning start is welcomed as we can’t wait to begin! Leave Mumbai at 0500 hours and drive to Panaji, reach around 1800 hours. Find our Hotel and check in. Day 2: Have breakfast and then set off for some local sightseeing. We’ve been to Goa before, but to be honest have not spent that much time in Panjim. This time though we plan to see Fontainhas, the Chapel of St.Sebastian, The Secretariat ( Idalcao Palace ), Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception and the Goa State Museum. Leave at around 1300 hours for Mangalore. Stop for lunch on the way and arrive at Mangalore at around 2000 hours. Check into Hotel. Day 3: Breakfast and a quick stop at some of the Temples ( Venkataramana Temple, Gokarnanatha, Kadri, Mangaladevi ) and Churches ( St. Aloysious, Milagris ) and head out to Kochi. Arrive at around 2000 hours. Check into Hotel. Day 4: An early morning start, a stop at the Elephant Training Centre at Kodanad is a must though, considering the fact that I am a nature enthusiast ( Wild elephants caught in the forest are trained here ) and then we head off to Kanyakumari via Thiruvananthapuram. We should arrive there by early evening, so that we can watch the sunset. Evening at the Hotel. Day 5: Since Kanyakumari was our final destination, we’ve decided to give ourselves an extra day here. Visit the Vattakottai Fort (Circular Fort), which was built by the King of Travancore, as a coastal defense-fortification. It's about 7 km from Kanyakumari. There’s also the Vivekananda Rock, the 100 year old Our Lady of Ransom Church and Baywatch which is a water theme amusement park at Sunset Point and home to India's first wax museum. We’re not that interested in the amusement park, but the wax museum might be interesting! Watch the sunset again, and have an early night so we’re prepared for the long drive the next morning. Day 6: Today’s marks one of the longest drives in this trip – 678.26 Kms! Leave at 0600 hours, and stop at around 1400 hrs for a quick lunch break. Leave in about an hour and arrive at Chennai at around 2200 hrs. Check into Hotel. Day 7: Breakfast, and a visit to the Guindy Snake Park, reason being the last time I went there was many eons ago, and I was dying to see if my childhood memories of the place held well! Then set off for Thiruvallur, which is 42 kms west of Chennai. Stop at the Hindustan Motors Car Plant and spend some time there and then head to Bangalore. Arrive at Bangalore in the evening. Check into Hotel. Spend the evening at a nice restaurant somewhere, of which there are lots to choose from! Day 8: Leave at 0600 hours, and drive to Panaji. Arrive at Panaji around 1800 hours and drive straight to Baga Beach where we’re going to have a well deserved break! Check into a guesthouse as these give you the true flavor of Goa. Day 9: We’re going to soak up the sun, and let ourselves go today! It’s been a long and hectic schedule, and this is our time to just stop being on the move for a bit! Day 10: Drive from Baga Beach to Mumbai. We’re not going to rush it today as it’s our very last day and no one ever wants their holiday to end, and what a holiday it’s been! We decide to leave only at 0900 hours, stop en route for lunch, and arrive in Aamchi Mumbai at around 2100 hours. This is an ambitious plan, but very doable, and if we get short-listed and selected, we can’t wait to set off!

Our Travelogue

Both Rohit and I love travelling, but we are particularly fond of road trips. Documenting these trips both visually, monetarily and penning down experiences is all a part of these trips, and so our blog is our travelogue! Rohit has been an avid blogger and has been blogging since 2006. Below is a very brief summary of the four road trips that we’ve been on. Our first road trip to Mandarmani was an adventure of sorts as it was our first road trip together. I planned and planned, but since Rohit had been there before, he seemed quite sure about the route and timelines. We started from Kolkata and drove until Kolaghat, and driving on the super smooth expressway of the Golden Quadrilateral was a pleasure. We turned off from there towards Contai, and while the roads deteriorated marginally, it was still ok until we reached Contai from where the highway became a single lane tarred road! The final stretch was through 14 kms of dirt track through villages until we came upon a “bund”. We then drove along the beach for about 2 kms which was the final stretch until we reached our Hotel. I then realized why Rohit had insisted that we get there before sundown. Firstly, it becomes pitch dark, and we wouldn’t have been able to see anything on the beach, and secondly, once the high tide came in, the harder portion of the beach would be under water, and we wouldn’t be able to reach our Hotel. We spent two days on this virgin beach with rippling waves and red crabs before we headed back to Kolkata. Our second and longest road trip till date was to Orissa. We had wanted to drive off somewhere before summer set in and worked out a plan to go to Orissa. The trip was planned for 6 days and entailed us driving to Puri on Day One and then spending a couple of days there. We bought our ice-case for this trip and ever since have located an ice factory in the most god-forsaken places on our trips, just to keep our drinks cold! After two days in Puri enjoying the sun, sand and food, we headed to Gopalpur. On the way we first went to Konark to see the famous Sun Temple, and then to the Chilka Lake where we spent over three hours on a boat traversing the lake which is a famous bird sanctuary, as well as home to the Irrawady dolphins. We then headed to Gopalpur where we spent a day before heading back to Kolkata. On the way back we stopped at Bhubaneswar where we spent some time at Nandankanan ( a zoo cum wildlife sanctuary where we saw some lovely white tigers! ), and the Udaygiri and Khandigiri Caves. After that trip, we used a long weekend to go to another virgin white sand beach in West Bengal called Bakkhali. This is where the Sunderbans start from. The unique thing about this beach destination is that they have not allowed any of the resorts and hotels to be on the beach. And we loved the trip to the beach every day on the local “van”! The interesting part about this trip was that to get there, at a certain point along the way, the car needed to be loaded onto a ferry, which then took us across a river to the other side from where we drove the last hour or so to get to Bakkhali. We also saw something in Bakkhali we hadn’t seen for a long time – windmills! Our most recent road trip was to Ranchi for a friend’s wedding, which we decided to do by road. We could have taken the easy way out and gone by train / flight, but we just needed an excuse for another road trip! We did enough research before going, to make the trip worthwhile. The drive through the Chota Nagpur Plateau made for a picturesque journey. We managed to check out the famous Dasham Falls and believe it or not, two chameleons engaged in battle (we guessed) in the middle of the forest road. Its moments like these that we thirst for on our journey. Our love for travel and road trips are well documented on Rohit’s blog : http://turquoisechill.blogspot.com/search/label/Trips Have a look, and you’ll get to see how we encompass the entire experience right from the car to the terrain, vegetation, architecture, food and people.

Rohit and Driving are substitutable and I can put my money that he and his other better half (actually not half but far superioir - ;)) are a mania when given rein of a wheel. Rohit is really passionate about driving and if one follows his blog he will always find him roaming in some unheard place. I really wish that this CEDIA trophy be with them.

Madhav Adige

I do wish they bag the CEDIA.Both are avid travellers and rohit an avid photographer.I get to see new places through them.Would be great for them to travel in CEDIA comfort.

Fazle Kabir

Lots of luck...

Sheldon

They have always had a passion for travel and even more for journeying off the beaten path where you can see a place up close and personal. Inside any car he is precise, focused, detail oriented, clear and communicative. I travelled with Rohit on several occasions. In addition to being one of the very fastest and safest drivers in the group, Rohit excels at communicating both vehicle dynamics and driving technique. He strives for perfection in everything he does. Rohit is extremely talented behind the wheel, and extremely versatile, being gifted on pavement or dirt. Sure boys like their toys, but Rohit Nyss is no ordinary boy. He describes machines like most guys describe Megan Fox %u2013 frothing at the mouth, pupils dilated and pulse racing. Understandably, his idea of having sexy models on the desktop is quite different from the rest of mankind. From amassing miniature collectibles to test driving any new car that hits the streets, this rabid racer is extremely dangerous for society to be left loose in any confined space. He needs to be locked up and put behind%u2026a set of wheels, to be unleashed on the road! Coming from a travel writer and fellow road tripper, I think the organizers should forget about them taking part in the Driving Challenge. Just hand the lovely couple the winners%u2019 trophy.

If its going to be a road trip challenge no one's better than our Mr. Nyss to take that... have a great vroom vroom ride....

My Bhaiya and Div are the bestest in the world and just love driving off too new places. More often than not, when I call, they're on their way somewhere or the other. I hope they get to go on a nother wonderful driving trip and tell us all about their adventures.

devdutta

as far as i know divya and her hubby, they are always very excited about outings. And I think there excitement should be the reason why they should win this competition. Way to go..

tania

i have never seen a couple like divya and rohit who are so enthusiastic abt travelling..the best thing abt them is that they are always poised to set off...no preparations...just jet set go...

DEV D

In the journey called life, neither the prince nor the pauper win anything. The king wins nothing, the defeated loses nothing. Its the traveler who sees it all and completes his or her journey. Divya and Rohit as far as I know them are Travelers in the purest sense. This road trip is not their destination, but their destiny..walk on

Rangan

Divya and Rohit are an amazing couple. They are adventorous, fun loving and always enthusiastic about everything they do. They compliment each other very well as well. I think they are worthy candidates to win the competition

It seems like The Mitsubishi Great driving Challenge is just what Divya & Rohit were waiting for! The strong urge to get behind the wheel again to set off on yet another exciting road trip has set their adrenaline pumping! Ever ready to pack their bags and getaway in their 'home'-on-four-wheels, this couple have relished every trip they've made, be it the just the drive to the outskirts of Kolkata or the longer ones to Puri and Ranchi. Rohit's love for photography has helped capture each of their adventures on his blog for all to share. Their passion for driving and thirst for adventure is what got them on to TGDC. Good luck and drive on!!!!!!!!!

Rohit is a born explorer! His passion for adventure is matched only by his lust for speeding on four wheels. And he takes his blog very seriously too... he often asks me for suggestions on how to improve his pictures, the narrative, etc. And Divya, calm and composed, is the perfect foil for him. They make a great team! Give 'em the prize!

Ravinder Y

It's not about traveling or driving only. Divya and Mr. R. have more importantly a very positive attitude, desire to explore possibilities, look at things from different angle and above all passion for what they do. Be it traveling, going new places, trying new eating points, finding new streets in the city, getting drenched in rain, cycling......and list goes on. This go-getter couple is most capable to win this challenge. Wishing them all luck.
