In the 26 years and 1 month I’ve spent so far on planet earth, I lived for 10 months in Varanasi and East Uttar Pradesh. Those 10 months left me with more memories and life experiences than some of the places I’ve grown up for years in. The post that follows is a short look back at Varanasi, the city. Every corner of this 3000 yr old city tells a story to the lakhs of tourists that come down every year from across the world; but more than stories, it leaves an indelible mark on the people who stay back long enough to experience all that it can give. People like me.

To misquote Dickens’ novel - Varanasi, a city of two tales.

After checking out the equipment over the weekend; I was up early morning, panning the landscape from our balcony to see if I could get an interesting picture. As I was looking around, through my viewfinder I caught sight of Mr. Owlet, our neighbourhood ‘Spotted Owlet’, who is normally seen sitting on one of the trees around our house. Today he was sitting quietly, on a tree about 100 feet away, trying to take a morning snooze. But unfortunately a snooze was not written out for him. As I focused on this small owl, I saw a squirrel, up and bright, scurrying around near Mr. Owlet probably seeking his morning breakfast.

Everyone’s started the car and driven off to “relax” and “unwind”, on a stressful day. Clear open roads anticipate your drive through. Especially in a place like Goa, where we can boast of smooth, wide highways. Ever wondered what is it, that makes you feel-good about that drive?

Today, any artist is a ‘Ruined artist’ ...and it has been so,always.
Don’t agree??? Let me tell you kinds of Ruined Artist :
Type 1. Someone who badly, madly wants to be an artist but he can not become one due to his family pressure/responsibilities, he is a Ruined artist.
Type 2. Someone who practices art..but has to give in to market forces and is not able to bring out through his art, what he actually intended to, he is a Ruined artist.
Type 3. Someone who makes what he wants to make .. but ends up being bankrupt,he is a ruined artist.
Type 4. Someone who even if makes things in the way he wants and earns well enough from it also but believes only in ‘art for art sake’ and doesn’t believe in ‘Art for Cause’, he is a Ruined Artist.
Type 5. At last, Someone who believes in ‘Art for Cause’ ...he is ‘The Ruined Artist’ ! Why?? Lets find out ...

What kind of a bird is called a Frogmouth?! How can a bird look like a frog?! These are questions that ran through our minds when we visited the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Thattekad, Kerala; one of the few places in South India, where these birds are found. The Sri Lankan Frogmouths are very unusual looking birds. We cannot say that they have a vibrant, colourful plumage, but they are so beautifully camouflaged amongst dry leaves that if not for a trained eye, its very difficult to spot them. Now why are they so named? This was a question that got answered when we actually saw the first pair.  See it for yourself and you will know why these birds are called the Frogmouths.
