Manali Leh Highway, 15th June 2007, after having driven for about 12hrs we stopped our Scorpio, mesmerised by a surreal world orchrested by the wind, the temperature a few degrees below zero.......... Barlachala at 16000 feet one of the Loftiest, trickiest and most scenic mountain passes in the world. This trip was our longest drive yet…Delhi to Leh and return covering almost 2000km...a dream come true, For us it was about reaching another level of a journey that began humbly on a Kinetic Honda from Bangalore to Hogenakkal in Tamil Nadu 17years ago.... Whether it is about driving through some of the highest mountain passes or filming wild tigers within breathable distance or trekking to a glacier… to us it is the very essence of life and great lessons in living... Eco-travellers and eco- warriors, my husband Mansij and I are from Gurgaon. He is a Techie while I facilitate personal effectiveness programs. He photographs, I write. He is more grounded while I love to dwell in the world of Narnia. We have our own consulting company modelled on our ideology and spirit of adventure. Proud Parents of two sons, Abhiroop (teenager, homo-sapien) and Simba (8 yrs, German Shephard).

We are the best candidates because...

Driving is our passion...and it about being exposed to a diverse terrain, be it Khardungla at 18300ft, Chitkul a remote village near the last outpost on Indo-China border, driving through the Jalori pass in pitch dark and mist, negotiating the dusty More plains on way to Leh from Manali, gingerly reversing on the narrow and slushy Barlachala, looking out for wildlife while driving through a jungle at the dead of night... Our list is exhaustive...almost the entire Uttaranchal & Himachal, Large parts of Ladakh, parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Southern India. More than anything we are advocates of discover India...and we are proud of our heritage. Through our travelogues we want to encourage this and create an awareness to respect the ecology and cultural heritage unique to a destination...that many travellers choose to ignore or have little regard for...

Our Travel Plan

India...the mesmerising land......a country that despite the nuclear treaty, multinationals, laptop carrying geeks, metro rails, expressways, shopping malls, multiplexes and cellphone generation... still carries a unique aura of mystic...to the rest of the world...the land of myths and legends...of the first known civilisation. Our plan is to showcase the mystic india blending in the 21st century and the "unity in diversity" by driving through 3-4 states, each with it's uniquely rich features and heritage. We have worked on two options...and will finally decide on one of them... Option 1: Mumbai - Indore - Chittorgarh - Ajmer - Nagaur - Jodhpur - Uaipur - Ahmedabad - Daman - Mumbai. Option 2: Mumbai - Indore - Shivpuri - Agra - Jaipur - Chittorgarh - Udaipur - Ahmedabad - Daman - Mumbai This is a broad itinerary. But it is not in our nature to just follow a straight road, because driving is to discover and enjoyis not just about driving only. Therefore along the way, we intend to discover, at times taking a small detour, the soul of these places, little known hamlets, many not featuring on standard maps. That is the plan in our endeavor to discover India..

Our Travelogue

It was a saga that began 17 years ago on a Kinetic Honda from Bangalore to Hogenakkal falls around 170 km. in the heartland of Tamil Nadu. Here the river Cauvery falls over a rocky ledge. The coaracle boat ride reminded of a song sequence from the film Roja and the delicious aroma and taste of the Chicken Biryani at a village dhaba near Dharmapuri still lingers. Yes a Kinetic Honda and a Bajaj Chetak, a manual Yashica camera and a Rucksack, and two studds helmets, that’s how it all began. Next came the Maruti 800 with more driving destinations this time with our little Abhiroop. Bangalore to Tirupati, Mysore, Ooty, the Forests of Bandipur and Mudumalai and many other places around Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. We owe our initiation to driving in the Himalayas also to this little car. Over the years we dared more. With an Indica we explored the Kumayun Himalays... the ancient temples at Bageshwar, the enchanting forest of Binsar, filming the Panchachulli peaks at Munsiyari…and many more. A Ford Ikon initiated us into a whole night driving straight from Katra (Jammu) to Delhi including driving through a landslide in pitch dark somewhere in the Kangra Valley. The Josh Machine also took us on a memorable leisure trip to the exiled abode of the Dalai Lama at Mcleodganj and gave us our true feel of the NH8 (Delhi-Jaipur-Ajmer) on our first piligrimage to the holy city of Ajmer on a cold foggy winter morning. Our most memorable major driving trip abroad was exploring the West Coast in a Mercury Sable, on Highway 101, from San Francisco to San Diego via Los Angeles. Undoubtedly it is one of the most spectacular drives with Cliffs and ranches on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. En-route the major attractions are Hollywood, Universal Studio, Disneyland and Seaworld. Over the years we have evolved, us and the machines. Today it is a Scorpio that we drive to the mountains, rugged and unknown terrains and a Skoda Octavia to well known highways like NH8. Over the last 4 years we have explored some of the remotest and wonderful Himalayan destination in our Scorpio like… The Beautiful Himachal Pradesh…..Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur, Sangla, Kangra, Chamba to Kullu & Manali. We have driven across some of the Loftiest and trickiest mountain passes…Jalori (10280ft), RohtangLa (13050ft), BarlachaLa (16000ft), NakiLa (16250ft), LachungLa (16600ft), TanglangLa (17500ft) and KhardungLa (18380ft). Have driven and explored some of the remote and lesser known destinations deep in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. To mention a few…Pokhri, Chopta (For a trek to Tunganath), Ukhimath and Gopeshwar and some places that are only found in Surveyors maps. The list is long of our driving escapades….. Delhi to Sikkim is next on the cards, to be followed by many more….. It’s been wonderful and addictive…an evolutionary process where we are enriched and hungry for more…Our photographic equipments too have evolved with state of art digital cameras and sophisticated lenses. Yet while the vehicles have changed and the ones we started with are long gone….the Yashica and the Rucksack remains as a collectors item, a prized possession…..

Sharad Kumar Vats

I have known Mansij & Chandrani for over a couple of decades, and i have always envied this couple for the time they take out to drive together in the wild, mountains, & desserts. A perfect made for each other couple, if only we had more such couples and parents in our society, it would be a lovely place to stay in. I feel blessed and honoured to know them, their compatibility, their divine understanding, their love for humanity and care for nature. God bless them in all their endeavors in life. Sharad Vats

Amitakshya Roy Chowdhury

Mansij & Chandrani are both hardcore drivers each having more than 14 years of driving experience covering a distance of more than 3 lakh Kilometers between them. They both have a great appetite for long distance drives across varied terrains be it the rugged ice laden Rohtang Pass or the meandering narrow Jungle Roads across Uttaranchal. More than anything they are very adventurous and try things which others dream of. I am sure they will come out successful as such kind of competition are really meant for them.

Knowing Mansij I can say he puts all his heart and mind 200% in whatever he loves to do. Driving and being close to mother earth are his passion. When you love something so dearly, how can you not try to capture those memories? So, naturally, photography is in his blood. I am sure Chandrani and Mansij will do a great job. Have a nice time! I hope to track you on your blog while you are on the road!!

Anuradha Madan

Chandrani a born gypsy and then she found a soul mate in Mansij...her passion for driving from what i have known is not limited to just driving through different places. Both of them are truly concerned and passionate about the environment and the impact of all that we civilised people do to those pristine places that we visit for our pleasure...a couple that i personally have known to be nature lovers, animal lovers and yeah, people lovers...creative and forever inspired...their passion for travel and environment is so infectious that its hard to be around them and not get infected !!! Personally friends that have stood the test of time, parents who, despite their demanding work schedules have never let it effect their son, and devoted children of very proud parents who have never shirked their duty....everything can and has waited when its come down to attending to family...that's what the two are...from what i know of them...and for them travel has always been a means of connecting...with nature, with places, with people...

Protip Ghose

We have known Chandrani and Mansij for over six years and love their passion for long drives and photography. On their return we enjoy their driving experiences which they share along with a slide show of the brilliant photographs that they also capture on these long drives. We share their passion for these long drives and are looking forward to joining them in one of their escapades from the grind of daily life.

Deepti / Aditya Singh

We have known Chandrani for over 25 years and Mansej for over 5. It is absolutely wonderful and refreshing meeting them each time as they are very different from the regular people one comes across these days. They are extremely passionate about wildlife and exploring the wild and their passion is infectious. In addition, they both are wonderful drivers and keep going for long driving trips which ties in very well with their passion for wildlife. They are driven and motivated to a level which is somewhat uncommon in today%u2019s times. We admire them deeply for this quality and always look forward to spending time with them.

Nalini Menon

Chandrani and her soul mate Mansij have a single passion --- travel. Their joy in driving around the country stopping at the oddest places, photographing the sunrise or the sunset, drinking tea at wayout dhabas, negotiating the most difficult terrain because they `just must see what lies on the other side%u2026%u2019 is legendary. Showcasing India as it should be --- warts and all is what makes their adventures so real and so special. The environment means a great deal to both of them and to this end both of them will do anything to preserve the beauty that is India.

charu shrivastava
